Every student has the capability to learn and appreciate music in a meaningful way. Moreover, students develop a deeper understanding of music if they have been exposed to the “musical language” first before notation. Every student can develop and grow in this manner through various techniques such as audiation training, hearing and working with the different layers of music, as well as developing improvisational skills. I believe that teaching all the elements of music beyond just the melody gives students a well-rounded view of what music is about which allows them to discover and learn on their own. I want to allow that discovery and learning because it develops an appreciation and enjoyment for music.
As a music teacher, I want to develop an enthusiasm and love for music regardless of whether or not students continue studying. I want to give students the opportunity to study music in a way that is meaningful and gives them the chance to express music with full engagement to gain full rewards. I want to develop high-quality ensembles and individuals that have the capability to share music in the way it’s supposed to be shared regardless of age. I want to develop life-long learners, explorers, and appreciators of music because without music life lacks an integral part of being human.
